6 Must Haves for a Versatile, Modest Wardrobe

If you're anything like me, sometimes it feels like you're wearing the same outfits over and over again. I get frustrated looking at blogs whose authors have dozens and dozens of beautiful, unique outfits. For many of us, that simply isn't plausible. I have to be realistic here: I don't have $600 a month to spend on clothes - end of story. I don't even want to spend $60 on clothes a month.

If we're in the same boat, it's important to buy some articles of clothing that don't have to be worn with a specific top and shoes. You know, those ever so versatile staples? Here are my "must haves."

Staples with Pops of Color

  1. A classic denim jacket. This can be worn almost anytime of the year. It covers up shirts that are a little bit see through in the back or a dress that doesn't have sleeves; it pulls together a floral skirt and a solid top. Honestly, I just feel more put together when I wear a denim jacket.
  2. A collection of white t-shirts. I say collection because I can't wear white shirts more than one day in a row due to messy kids (and sweat... I live in FL, people). I love wearing these with both solid and print skirts. They can be dressed up or dressed down, and they're definitely a must.
  3. Camisoles or tank tops to wear under those white shirts. Unfortunately, most white shirts are thin. To hide the undergarments and make sure everything's modestly covered, grab a couple tank tops to layer with shirts that might be a little too see through or a smidge too low. I love these from Old Navy.
  4. Nice solid color skirts in your length of choice. I'd rather have one or two quality skirts that will withstand loads and loads of washing than having many that will fade, shrink, and wear after just a few launderings. I have had pretty good success finding modest denim skirts at Cato; I also have a Ralph Lauren skirt that I splurged on - it's dark denim and has washed ridiculously well.
  5. Pewter strappy sandals. Honestly, I wear my pewter sandals almost every day! They match just about everything, and they're comfortable walking long distances and chasing kids. I have last year's version of this sandal from Target.
  6. "Pearl" or "diamond" studs. These don't have to be changed for every outfit. They can be worn on a regular basis and are timeless and elegant. Available at Target or Walmart, I wore mine all the time until I purchased these pearl drop earrings from Etsy.
Once you have the necessities, you're well on your way to having a great wardrobe. Buy some fun scarves and colorful jewelry as a way to spice up the basics.
